Montemarcello

Montemarcello is a beautiful village overlooking the Gulf of La Spezia, the open sea, the foreshore of Versilia and the estuary of the river Magra from the top of the so called “Caprione” promontory.
This is certainly one of the most picturesque landscapes of the Ligurian coast bordering with Tuscany.

Carrara is not far from here and looking east beyond the plain of Luni, the Apuane Alps with their white streaks of the marble quarries seem so close to be touched.
This village was named after the Roman Consul Claudio Marcello, who defeated here in 155 B.C. the Ligurian inhabitants of the Apuane Alps that lived in this land.

It’s a very ancient village, and walking the “Caprione” area is like passing through centuries of history.
You can go for a walk along the Roman road that is still paved with stones somewhere as far as Bocca di Magra where there is a beautiful thermal Roman villa of the 4th century B.C. Otherwise you can visit Luni and its archaeological excavations and Roman amphitheatre.

The defensive works of the village and the picturesque church dedicated to St. Peter are traced back to the 15th century.
The green area of the reserve where a botanic garden has been created along a guided path from which you can observe a great multiplicity of autochthonous plants surrounds Montemarcello and the close villages of Ameglia and Bocca di Magra.
